Gegenstand der Arbeit sind individuelle und negativ konnotierte Schweigeformen im Kontext von traumatischen Erfahrungen. Die Analyse folgt einer Typologie, die den schweigenden Akteur fokussiert. Das Korpus umfasst Texte, die Schweigen an Zäsuren der deutschen Geschichte des 20. Jh. verhandeln und in Bezug zu Fragen des Erinnerns und der Identitätskonstitution setzen. Gezeigt wird, dass Schweigen im Sinne einer kommunikativen Handlung tendenziell destruktiv auf die Ausbildung von Erinnerungs- und Identitätsentwürfen wirkt, es im Verständnis einer narrativen Strategie hingegen zum produktiven Moment der Strukturierung und Formgebung der Erzähltexte avanciert.
