Many medieval religious plays survive in manuscripts without reference to theatrical performance; rather, they are presented as literary texts in their own right. A series of case studies focusing on Passion and Christmas plays in their specific manuscript traditions illuminates the meaning of these under-researched works for the history of literature, culture, and piety. The title 'geistliche Lesespiele' ('Religious Plays for Reading') coins a term that permits the systematic and methodological study of this distinctive type of transmission of the texts of plays, found not only in the German-speaking world, but throughout Europe.
